Print with a Brother DCP-T420W from a Mac
A Mac may recognise the Brother DCP-T420W but still be unable to print to it. This free software adds support for printing from normal Mac applications.
What works
The package provides controls for colour, paper size and print quality. Scanning is also available, but it requires typed commands rather than a scanning window. Some settings, including resolution, adjust the resulting image rather than controlling the scanner directly.
Limitations
Scanning requires typed commands and has limited settings. The package is unsigned, so installation needs additional approval. Testing does not cover every system listed by the project; see Testing and reports below.
Installation
Follow the guide to install the unsigned macOS package with administrator permission. The installer finds the printer and adds it to the Mac. Test a short document. Scanning requires separate commands. Optional phone sharing requires the Mac to stay awake and allows others on the network to print; read the guide before enabling it. Removal instructions are provided in the project guide.
Help with downloads and setup explains download choices, security warnings and recovery planning.
Testing and feedback
The developer, hwisu, reports printing and scanning with a DCP-T420W on an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 26.5. The computer model, OS build, test date and software version were not specified. The v1.3.4 release notes describe checks without installing the package or physically testing printing and scanning for that release. No runtime test on macOS 11 is reported.
Community reports
An upstream user reports v1.3.4 working on two macOS versions. The report does not specify the device model, processor or functions tried; we have not reproduced it.
